Through the month of March, the Seguin Heritage Museum will be displaying a small exhibit honoring the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence from Mexico, Mar. 2, 1836. Included in the exhibit are copies of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a copy of the letter addressed to the citizens of Texas and the Union from William Travis. In the letter Travis requested assistance for the Alamo. Also included in the display is a map of the Republic of Texas circa 1836 and a painting that provides all the names of the delegates who signed the declaration. In addition, on display is original Republic of Texas money containing a one dollar coin with a stamped picture of Samuel Houston and a variety of denominations of paper currency .Photos of the Seguin 2009 “Toast of Texas” are also on display. The event held annually, takes place on the anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration and is organized by the local Abishai Mercer Dickson Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. History is being restored in neighboring Yorktown, about 1 & 1/2 hrs. from Seguin with the reconstruction of Gruenau Hall. See photo below.

Seguin Heritage Museum has a great following on

A lot of our events have received generous mention on that site.

So, in return I am reminding readers to check out one of their events, visit their site, as well.

The Gruenau Hall Gala will be held Sat. Mar. 6 and is a fundraising event to benefit the completion of construction of Grenau Hall.

All tickets are in advance none will be sold at the door and info is available by calling 564.3144(Bill/Debbie Niemeier) or visiting http://gruenauhall.com/default.aspx.

The Gruenau Turn and Schuetzen Verein was formed in 1898 much like similar sites in Guadalupe and Comal County. It was begun as an athletic and shooting club in the Gruenau community by German immigrants. By 1928 the organization had buillt the Gruenau Hall which was very popular with area residents.

]This historic landmark was lost to a fire on Jan. 17, 2007 and since that time members of Gruenau have been rebuilding. They are now in stage 3 of construction with a completion date and reopen date of late summer 2010. They would like to thank countless people for their generosity in accomplishing and moving forward in this task.
