"We Dig Seguin", Show and Tell slated for Oct. 30

Have you ever wondered about that unusual fossil or arrowhead you found on your last trip to the south Texas countryside? If you’d like to know more about it, plan to attend the Seguin Heritage Museum “Show and Tell” on Oct. 30.
Letting everyone know “We Dig Seguin”, Texas archaeologists will give kids and adults alike, the opportunity to “show” an archaeologist an artifact they have found and then have the researcher “tell” them all the data available about that object. (Fee of 1-2 artifacts, for $5 and 3-5, for $10)
Texas archaeologists will be in Seguin to present a hands-on demonstration at the McKee/STAA dig, an 11,000 year old Paleo-Indian site, 2015 Stockdale Hwy, on the left, just past Starcke Park Bridge.
In addition, some of the archaeologists’ finds will be on display at the Seguin Heritage Museum, that same day from 11 a.m. til 4 p.m.
* A scheduling change, the originally announced teepee construction and storytelling has been postponed.
Notable among the many in attendance that day will be Seguin’s own Charlie Eckhardt, author of western stories and a Texas historian, who will give a demonstration on the loading and firing of flintlock guns. Also among the archaeologists will be Richard Kinz , Bob and Carol Everett and Sue Ellen Turner author of “Stone Artifacts”. Turner, who will be autographing copies of her book, has been a member of Southern Texas Archaeologist Assoc., founded by Tom Hester, since the beginning nearly 35 years ago. Turner notes in describing her research, “I've been interested in archaeology most of my life. It all began with my father who drove my sisters and brother and I all over the United States on camping trips in the 20s and 30s. We visited practically all of the National Parks and Indian Reservations.”
She describes the McKee site as “obviously an interesting one … a rare opportunity to have such an incredible site and such supportive owners to add to our knowledge of the lifeways of Texas Indians. It is a learning opportunity for professional archaeologists and avocationals alike!”
Turner also commented, “I love research, sorting things out and organizing data. This coupled with Tom Hester's incredible knowledge of Texas archaeology and typology made for a great team.
“The first edition came out in 1985, the second in 1993 and now we are finishing up a greatly expanded third edition. Our new co-editor, Richard McReynolds, has done the beautiful illustrations
“The question I get asked most is: ‘When will the new book be in the bookstores!’ To this I can only answer, ‘Hopefully, next summer.’’
The STAA will be on site excavating and giving demonstrations, knappers will be demonstrating the art of flintknapping and newly made points and arrowheads will be available for purchase on site. There will also be a special “seeded” area for children and their parents to explore for artifacts.
The McKee site is a newly registered "Ancient Paleo Indian Site" where artifacts have been unearthed as far back as 200 years ago.

Marika Bordes Oct. 16 Sculpture Opening Update

Launching the Fall 2010 Seguin Heritage Museum season, on Oct. 16, a Seguin sculptress will bring her designs , intricate one of a kind, wood carvings to debut at a special evening opening slated from 6-9 p.m.
Marika Bordes’ sculptures in wood, along with her students' work, will then be open to the public, daily at the museum from 11a.m.-4p.m,
M-F, till the end of the year. The centerpiece of the display will be the 14' statue of "Gwaihir" carved and formed from a chinaberry tree, provided by John Schwartz of Seguin. The figure represents a character in "Lord of the Rings" and is the sculptress’ inspiration for the piece.
Providing background music that night will be Mitchell Jazz Group. Local musicians, the Seguin and Commerce Tx. based group includes,
Brad Davis, Sandi Mitchell and Scott Mitchell and their repertoire offers Christian/Indy/Gospel and Rock. Recording on the Planer Mill Records label, detailed info about them can be obtained at http://bereamusic.com.
From their biographical notes highlights are excerpts, “Sandi Mitchell, a formally trained singer from Nashville, is a graduate of Belmont University. She has performed in numerous stage productions, musical variety shows, in theme parks and on cruise ships. She directs children in many productions of ‘Time Travelers Theatre’ and the ‘Seguin Performing Arts Company’, …as well as ’ voiceover work and background vocals on independent musical projects.
“Brad Davis spent ten years performing on stage as a member of Marty Stuart's road band. For the past seven years he has played lead acoustic guitar with Earl Scruggs and Friends, and for the past six years he has played lead electric and acoustic guitar with movie actor Billy Bob Thornton's rock band. Brad has worked for or recorded with Willie Nelson, Emmylou Harris, Pam Tillis, The Forester Sisters, Tommy Shaw (Styx), David Lee Roth (Van Halen), Sheryl Crow, Sam Bush, Warren Zevon, and The Sweethearts of the Rodeo. Additionally, Brad has recorded two album projects featuring Billy Bob Thornton on Mercury Records and has toured both Europe and the United States as the lead guitar player for Billy Bob Thornton’s band.
“Scott Mitchell studied guitar at Southwest Guitar Conservatory in San Antonio and commercial music at Belmont University in Nashville. Scott has toured as lead guitarist with Louise Mandrell and Ty Herndon, performed with the late Elton John bassist Dee Murray, as well as Brad Davis. Scott has been on several television programs including Star Search and Hee Haw, and produced jingles for Hummingbird Productions in Nashville where he also recorded and played on numerous studio projects, as well as with the rock bands ‘Invasion of Privacy’ and ‘New Frontier. Scott currently resides in Seguin, where he pastors Grace Family Bible Church and writes and produces Berea music with Brad Davis.

The trio will provide background selections during the Marika Bordes exhibit opening from 6-9 p.m. at the museum, 114 N. River.

Fall Events At Seguin Heritage Museum

Seguin Heritage Museum 114 N. River , continues to showcase Texas history and Texas artists in the upcoming calendar of events through Dec. 31.
October 16, one of two headliners to launch the fall museum season, a Seguin sculptress will bring her designs which are intricate one of a kind wood carvings. The opening of that collection is slated from 6-9 p.m. during that evening.
Marika Bordes’ work, along with her students' displays, will then be open to the public, daily at the museum from 11a.m.-4 p.m M-F, till the end of the year. The centerpiece of the display will be the 14' statue of "Gwaihir" carved and formed from a chinaberry tree, provided by John Schwartz of Seguin. The figure represents a character in "Lord of the Rings" and is the sculptress’ inspiration for the piece which will be available for viewing from two vantage points, the street floor, adjacent to the display windows facing east and a view from the second floor.

Archaeology “Show and Tell”

The second headliner for October will be an archaeological hands-on "Show and Tell ", Oct. 30 which will be highlighting finds by Texas archaeologists at the Hwy 123 McKee/STAA (Southern Texas Archaeological Association)dig, 2015 Stockdale Hwy, near Starcke Park Bridge.
The public is invited to this event and donations will be accepted at $2 adults, $1 children. Refreshments will be provided and donations will be welcomed to help cover expenses. All donations are tax deductible . The STAA will be on site excavating and giving demonstrations, knappers will be demonstrating the art of flintknapping and newly made points and arrowheads will be available for purchase on site. Archaeologists will also be present to identify visitors’ artifact (s) for a donation of 1-2 artifacts at $5 and 3-5 items for $10. Guests are urged to bring Native American artifacts to “SHOW” and a professional archaeologist will “TELL” background on many of these items.
There will also be a special “seeded” area for children and their parents to explore for artifacts. The museum will also be open from 11-4 that same day, for a special viewing of the artifacts recovered from this site. Admission is free to the museum.
