"We Dig Seguin", Show and Tell slated for Oct. 30

Have you ever wondered about that unusual fossil or arrowhead you found on your last trip to the south Texas countryside? If you’d like to know more about it, plan to attend the Seguin Heritage Museum “Show and Tell” on Oct. 30.
Letting everyone know “We Dig Seguin”, Texas archaeologists will give kids and adults alike, the opportunity to “show” an archaeologist an artifact they have found and then have the researcher “tell” them all the data available about that object. (Fee of 1-2 artifacts, for $5 and 3-5, for $10)
Texas archaeologists will be in Seguin to present a hands-on demonstration at the McKee/STAA dig, an 11,000 year old Paleo-Indian site, 2015 Stockdale Hwy, on the left, just past Starcke Park Bridge.
In addition, some of the archaeologists’ finds will be on display at the Seguin Heritage Museum, that same day from 11 a.m. til 4 p.m.
* A scheduling change, the originally announced teepee construction and storytelling has been postponed.
Notable among the many in attendance that day will be Seguin’s own Charlie Eckhardt, author of western stories and a Texas historian, who will give a demonstration on the loading and firing of flintlock guns. Also among the archaeologists will be Richard Kinz , Bob and Carol Everett and Sue Ellen Turner author of “Stone Artifacts”. Turner, who will be autographing copies of her book, has been a member of Southern Texas Archaeologist Assoc., founded by Tom Hester, since the beginning nearly 35 years ago. Turner notes in describing her research, “I've been interested in archaeology most of my life. It all began with my father who drove my sisters and brother and I all over the United States on camping trips in the 20s and 30s. We visited practically all of the National Parks and Indian Reservations.”
She describes the McKee site as “obviously an interesting one … a rare opportunity to have such an incredible site and such supportive owners to add to our knowledge of the lifeways of Texas Indians. It is a learning opportunity for professional archaeologists and avocationals alike!”
Turner also commented, “I love research, sorting things out and organizing data. This coupled with Tom Hester's incredible knowledge of Texas archaeology and typology made for a great team.
“The first edition came out in 1985, the second in 1993 and now we are finishing up a greatly expanded third edition. Our new co-editor, Richard McReynolds, has done the beautiful illustrations
“The question I get asked most is: ‘When will the new book be in the bookstores!’ To this I can only answer, ‘Hopefully, next summer.’’
The STAA will be on site excavating and giving demonstrations, knappers will be demonstrating the art of flintknapping and newly made points and arrowheads will be available for purchase on site. There will also be a special “seeded” area for children and their parents to explore for artifacts.
The McKee site is a newly registered "Ancient Paleo Indian Site" where artifacts have been unearthed as far back as 200 years ago.
To visit the site, directions may be obtained by calling the museum at 830.372.0965 in advance, or email heritagemuseum@satx.rr.com. When visiting the site or the museum, donations of $2 adults, $1 for children will be greatly appreciated and are tax deductible. Refreshments will be provided . Visit Seguin Heritage Museum. 114 N.
